We have spent a great many production days assisting our clients and their clients with capturing coverage of a meeting or conference. One of the great things about having worked in San Diego for over 30 years is that we have built a network of colleagues all over the county, (and the country). When we need to get some special footage for a project we don't have to look very far. For this shot, our colleague Kelly Terry, Public Relations Manager at Sea World San Diego, arranged for us to get "tankside" and have control of Shamu and friends for particular footage needed by one of our clients. In preparation for ESPN’s telecast of Monday Night Football in San Diego, Director of Photography Bob Sloan leads a Sloan productions high definition crew and shoots the helmets of the opposing teams. San Diego hosted the Denver Broncos during ESPN, ABC, and Disney’s 40th year production of the most popular football telecast of each football season. By hiring local qualified production crews in San Diego, ESPN is able to control costs as opposed to traveling a crew across the country. This shot was used in the opening of the Monday Night Countdown show that precedes the actual telecast. For this shot a helium balloon with several daylight balanced instruments is tethered above the scene. The balloon light simulates the full moon by casting an even back/side light on the entire area. On any given day we provide professional San Diego video production crews to networks such as ESPN. This is a typical setup for what we call “on-camera interviews”. For this production, we are preparing former NFL star Michael Strahan to be interviewed via speakerphone by ESPN producer Korey Kozak. Shooting a “motion capture” session with Red Sox player Dustin Pedroia, Director of Photography Jeff Landie leads a Sloan production crew. San Diego is home to several video game producers all of whom employ motion capture to create more realistic game titles. In this photo, Pedroia wears a suit with markers near each joint to identify his motion by the positions or angles between the markers. The markers are then “captured” as he goes through his movements and are recorded by multiple cameras fixed around the stage. Cost effective production is facilitated by detailed notes and logs that are passed on to the editor. Jeff Landie marks individual and keeper takes during on location interviews for one of our corporate services clients.

Working in the operating room has some very specific challenges. One is positioning a camera above the surgeon to see his point of view. Sloan Productions has executed many single and multiple camera surgery shoots including oral, open-heart, & plastic surgery.

Proper handheld camera technique is different from simply "hand holding" the camera. In this example, Bob is filming former San Diego Charger Junior Seau being interviewed by Marcus Allen for CBS Sports. The handheld camera allows Bob to float with the interview, changing perspective and shot size as the situation changes.

Whether it's in a sterile clean room or an oilfield, Sloan Productions prepares for each specific environment. The location may be wet, extremely hot, cold, desolate, or dirty. It's not the challenge, but creating the solution that we enjoy.
